At Advent, the Lower School consists of the first through fourth grades. The basic curriculum includes:
Reading (with emphasis on phonics)
Language Arts (vocabulary, composition, literature, critical thinking, and writing)
Grades 1-4 have Library periods with instruction in library skills. Practice in study skills begins in third grade to prepare students for independent work in the higher grades. Students begin preparing and submitting research papers in fourth grade.
Social Studies in first through third grades is designed to give students an awareness of the social and physical world around them. Fourth graders study Alabama History.
