Advent Sweeps Haiku Contest
The Japan Program at the University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa sponsors a Haiku poetry contest every year. For this year, we are happy to announce that our 3rd and 4th grades swept the field.
Bella and Aoife Art Winners
Bella Whipple (Miss Johnson's class) and Aoife Martin (Mrs. DeWitt's class) received awards in the 2017 dreamArchitecture art competition. This year's theme was "Draw Your Dream Space Station!" Bella won Honorable Mention in the Kindergarden category and Aoife won 2nd place in the Second Grade category.
Addison's Team Wins State
Addison Doyle, a 5th grader, plays competitive soccer for the Birmingham United Soccer Association (BUSA) in the U-11 division. Her team played in the Alabama State Cup Tournament on May 6th and 7th in Decatur, AL. Addy’s BUSA team finished the tournament undefeated and won the state championship.
Josie Jumps To 1st Place
Josie Ellis, a 6th grader, competed in the Lachlan Farms Hunter/Jumper show April 28th. She placed first overall in her division (Academy Crossrails), with a first place in Equitation and Hunter 1, and 2 second place ribbons. Congratulations Josie on your first show!
6th Graders Help Pack Meals
Fifteen Advent 6th graders participated in the Rise Against Hunger program which shipped 300,024 meals to Nicaragua.
Letters About Literature Winners

Meglan In Youth Art Exhibition
Congratulations to 5th grader Meglan Welch whose artwork was selected for the Youth Art Month Exhibition at the Birmingham Museum of Art. A museum jury selected 60 artworks for the display in the exhibition representing elementary and secondary schools from across the Birmingham Metro Area.

7th grade (Level 2) - Caroline Beisher, Declan Doyle, Jack Langloh, Caroline Settle, Sela Trimm, and Olivia Wang.
This year's event on March 11 follows two themes: building community - strengthening ties within our school and establishing strong relationships between Advent and the downtown community - and bolstering the arts programming at Advent. In the 2016-2017 AISA State Creative Writing Competition, two Advent students finished first in their respective classifications. Izabella Kulczycka, a 6th Grader, won the 6-8 Grade division, and 4th Grader Sophia Self claimed the 3-5 Grade title. Click here for the complete results.
Advent truly believes that our students can go anywhere they desire. To help reach this point, the school relies on an annual giving campaign, named Advent Gives.
Meglan Meets CIA Head and Military Leaders
Meglan Welch, an Advent 5th grader, recently met with the Director of the Central Intelligence Agency, John Brennan, the former Commandant of the Marine Corps as well as the former Joint Chiefs of Staff General Krulak, and General Ennis, the former Director of Intelligence for the Marine Corps. This happened at the Miles College National Security Colloquium. They asked Meglan where she attends school and did she like it. She was excited to share about her adventures at Advent.

Mina Named Greene Scholar
Mina Oates has been named as a Greene Scholar at St. Paul's School in Concord, New Hampshire. An article about Mina, who just graduated from Advent, may be found on page 28 in OTMJ (click here).
Win for 5th Grade Math Team!
Advent's 5th Grade Math Team brought home the First Place Trophy in the Perennial Math Tournament at Birmingham-Southern College on April 9. Adding to the win, a couple of the team members also won individual trophies:
