Advent Episcopal School Librarian Awarded 2026 ASLA Library of the Year Award

Rachel Joiner Awarded 2026 Alabama School Library of the Year

We are proud to share that Advent Episcopal School librarian Rachel Joiner has been Awarded the 2026 Alabama School Library of the Year by the Alabama School Library Association (ASLA). This statewide award recognizes an outstanding library program that fosters creativity, innovation, and meaningful learning experiences for students.

Now in her seventh year at Advent, Mrs. Joiner has shaped the library into a space that is both dynamic and deeply student-centered. Through intentional programming and close collaboration with faculty, the library has become a place where students not only build strong research skills but also develop a lasting love of reading.

“My philosophy centers on creating a dynamic library program where literacy, research, and creativity intersect,” Joiner shared. “I aim to provide multiple entry points for students to engage with ideas, helping them develop both a love of reading and the skills to think critically. This recognition highlights the collaborative work of a school community committed to meaningful learning.”

Over the past several years, Joiner has introduced a number of initiatives that have transformed how students engage with the library. A reorganization by genre has made books more accessible and sparked curiosity, while school-wide reading challenges encourage students to explore new interests. Programs like the student-led mock Caldecott Awards and Read Across America bring the entire school community together around books.

Students are also invited to take ownership of their reading journey through Passport challenges, including genre exploration and Newbery contender reading. These efforts have led to increased independent reading and library use across grade levels. Even Advent’s youngest learners are part of the experience, with creative programming like the beloved stuffed animal sleepover that brings stories to life in memorable ways.

“Rachel has truly transformed what a school library can be,” said Head of School Claire Cassady Vaughn. “She knows every student as an individual reader and brings creativity to everything she does. What she has created here is a space full of curiosity, imagination, and genuine love of learning.”

In addition to fostering a love of reading, Mrs. Joiner plays a key role in supporting academic growth. She works closely with teachers to guide students in research and information literacy, helping them navigate projects across subjects. Through partnerships with local and university libraries, students gain access to primary sources and advanced tools that deepen their learning and prepare them for future success.

Rachel’s recognition reflects not only her dedication, but also Advent’s broader commitment to cultivating curious, engaged learners.
