Summer Professional Development

At Advent Episcopal School, our faculty and staff embody a strong commitment to excellence in K-8 education. To continue leading as a top independent school in Birmingham, our educators dedicate time year-round to support student growth and success. This summer, many took part in valuable professional development opportunities, including art workshops, teaching conferences, and leadership seminars for private school educators. Keep reading to discover what they learned and how they plan to bring these new ideas into our vibrant downtown classrooms.

Ellen Lockhart (1st) & Grace Lester (Pre-K)

Mrs. Lester and Ms. Lockhart attended the ELEVATE conference in Nashville, where they gained hands-on, research-based strategies from nationally recognized educators.

Both teachers left with actionable ideas they’re eager to bring into the classroom. One of Ms. Lester’s favorite takeaways was a morning meeting strategy using dancing, role play, and emotional vocabulary to help students name and manage their feelings. “I walked out of the conference feeling deeply seen, re-energized, and so ready to step into this school year with confidence and purpose,” she said.

Lelia Carlson ‘14 (Admissions)

In June, Ms. Carlson attended the Association of Independent School Admission Professionals (AISAP) Annual Institute in Maryland. It was an outstanding opportunity to connect with and learn from peers representing schools all around the country. She can’t wait to use this experience to continue helping Birmingham families find a home here at Advent!

Jennifer Gibson & Mollie Everitt (Art)

Our amazing art teachers, Ms. Gibson and Ms. Everitt, went to a printmaking workshop sponsored by the Alabama Art Educators Association. They connected with other local art educators and sharpened their skills.

Dr. Korliss Datcher (Athletics & DEIB)

As part of the National Association of Independent Schools (NAIS) Aspiring Heads Fellowship, Dr. Datcher took part in a week-long summer institute held July 21–25, 2025, focused on leadership development and preparation for headship. Throughout the program, experienced heads of school led in-depth sessions on governance, school finance, strategic planning, DEIJ, and crisis management. The experience offered valuable insight and a strong network of support as she continues to grow in her leadership journey.

Claire Cassady Vaughn ‘03 (Head of School)

This summer marks Mrs. Vaughn’s fifth year attending the SAIS Heads’ Institute, a multi-day professional learning experience designed specifically for heads of independent schools. The Institute offers space for strategic reflection, connection with peers, and candid conversations about the complexities of school leadership. Claire continues to value this annual opportunity to grow alongside fellow heads who share a deep commitment to mission-driven education.
